Most gas meters have three or four dials as shown above. To read a meter, read the last number each dial has completely passed. For ex-

ample, the first dial on the left reads seven. At first glance, the second dial might read three or four. Since the third dial has nearly completed

its revolution (it reads eight), the reading on the seond dial is three. The fourth dial reads seven. The correct meter reading is 7387 . A

complete revolution of the right hand dial represents one thousand cubic feet of gas and each number on the dial represents one hundred. cubic

feet. Therefore, a total of 738,700 cubic feet of gas has passed through this meter.
